SIMON SOHM, THE ALL-ROUND MIDFIELDER: ‘WE WORK TO GROW’

Collecchio 10 December 2024 - Work, hunger, and commitment always pay off. Simon Sohm knows this well, because he is someone who has never backed down. In fact, since he arrived at Parma from Zurich in October 2020, when he was nineteen years old, he has always trained hard trying to improve for himself and for his teammates. A strong attitude that has made him grow both as a man and as a player, as well as one of the focal points in Fabio Pecchia's strategies. But that's not all.

Since his arrival in Italy, he has made the most appearances for the Gialloblu out of everyone in the team: 133 in all competitions, including 85 as a starter. In the same period, Sohm not only scored four goals (including one against Juventus on 30 October in the 2-2 draw), but also provided 11 assists, which is only second to Dennis Man (13). Numbers that allowed him, after a period with the Swiss Under-21, to play for the Swiss National A team on 18 November in the first round of the Nations League against Spain. His path of growth is clear. He is constantly improving, so much so that he has become one of the indispensable men in Fabio Pecchia's line-up, both in the current season and in his past seasons in Serie B, culminating with promotion to Serie A at the end of last season's championship.

An all-round midfielder, adept at intercepting and recovering the ball, Simon Sohm prefers a game of short passes. With the ball by his feet, one of his signature moves is to ‘break’ the transition with sudden accelerations, as was seen at San Siro, when he first got a shot off and then immediately served Cancellieri with an assist. His dedication to his work is such that over the years he has become one of the leaders of the Gialloblu midfield, where he has an excellent understanding with his teammates - BernabéCamaraEstévezHainautHernani JrKeita - both on and off the pitch. Work, sacrifice and growth, qualities that have also led him to become Parma's captain in the absence of Enrico Delprato. This season Simon wore the armband in the first 3 matches against Fiorentina, AC Milan and Napoli, understanding more and more what this responsibility means in the Gialloblu world.

At Parma, I settled in immediately, all my teammates welcomed me well and were close to me, as was the coach. I owe a lot to Fabio Pecchia, because I have grown so much here in recent years, to the point of regaining a place on the Swiss team. This is thanks to the work we all do together, day in day out, with the desire to continue to grow and improve,’ said the Swiss midfielder. After a fantastic performance in the match against Inter, he is already ready for the next Serie A game on Sunday 15 December at the Stadio Tardini (15:00 CET) against Hellas Verona, whom Simon Sohm has only faced once before. On 15 February 2021 at the Stadio Bentegodi, the match ended 2-1 to the Veronesi. On Sunday, Simon will want to lead the midfield and the team to overcome that defeat. And to show that the 19-year-old has grown up and made a comeback in Serie A, just over three years after that match.
