COACH FABIO PECCHIA: “A TEAM VICTORY”

Venice, 9 November 2024 - Remarks from coach Fabio Pecchia at the end of Venezia vs Parma, on Matchday 12 of Serie A 2024/25.

'We don't have provide answers on anything to anyone, because we've always played matches and made mistakes, paying dearly for them. Today was a very hard-fought game, very different from the last ones we played. In certain moments, when the game could have gone one way or the other, we used to choose the easier path, but today I saw a great group because an 18-year-old made his debut and this is the demonstration that I want to be ‘all in’. It's a victory for the team and this is a victory that we must really hold on to. Our path must be clear. I don't have to go after the swings of emotions that are created around the team. This is not good for the team, because I coach a young team, the youngest team in the Serie A league. We made a big step in the right direction today. And we must maintain the level of perormance. To think we can do all this in a short time is crazy. We have had so many great games. It was thought that we could have a few more points, that's obvious, that we could have a few more points, but that's the standings, we hold on to it, and so we continue to work believing in our values, in our principles, especially in the game. There are many solutions, the fact that the guys on the field sees them is important for me and fundamental also for the team because when there are moments of drops, someone is in a better condition, and when the team needs a fast attack, we can deliver with different characteristics. We need a slightly more positional attack and today out of eight forwards, seven played in the end. The only one I had left was Almqvist. But good attitude. It wasn't easy. After three minutes we were down and the team really reacted. Yes, on the pitch they reacted very well.'

'It is a group of many young people with good potential. My task, at least as far as the staff and I are concerned, is to improve each individual and win games, as well as score points. To carry on both ways, but always with the same style, never losing sight of what our way of being on the pitch and also of behaving is. There will be dark moments, complicated moments, but the team must be ready for anything because this is the Serie A. Today's game, from the point of view of team spirit and desire, was really important. When we were a goal down immediately, there was a reaction. In the second half there was a chance that Venezia could have gone ahead, and on that action it was reversed. We found the way to the goal and then from there we defended to the bitter end. Great spirit, I'm really happy, because maybe it's one of the games that is different from all the others played. I would like to note the return of Benedyczak to the field after a long time and also the debut of Giovanni Leoni in Serie A. Why did I send him onto the pitch? I see them work every day, the moments they have and there you have to have a bit of luck when you choose them. But I had and have no doubt in my mind that he could handle the game in terms of nerves. He handled it very well, it's obvious that he was also physically fit. It was a good call, we have an extra player. They got used to it a bit, it's my way of working, of keeping them in, of changing positions. Beyond that, today I would really like to underline the spirit because we were coming back from a defeat, a bad defeat at home, and our path up to this point had been quite linear. We could have picked up something more along the way and we didn't gather many points. Yet the team has never been disunited in its daily work. This is a victory that must give the whole group a boost. What I ask of the boys is to play games one at a time and play them to win and try to play our game. We have picked up very few points against our direct competitors. We come from a game, in Turin, where there is great regret, because we deserved a victory that was not down to luck. But we have to get used to this and to what Serie A is, our way of playing has to continue like this: the desire to muck in and play the game. Now there's the break, many of the lads are going on international duty, then we'll prepare one game at a time. Giovanni Leoni's debut must also be a satisfaction for the boy because he faced a game that was not particularly easy from a psychological point of view and he did it with a certain solidity. We were coming from the third tough game, the game in Turin, what I had said, in Turin Juve had taken a lot of energy from us and we paid for it a little in the game with Genoa. Then a few injuries in the midfield, it's clear that I needed to put new energy into it. Cancellieri and Benek's impact on the match gave me the feeling that they had something more, which gives me the feeling that I have possibilities on the bench, alternatives that were able to give what they can in reduced minutes. Simon Sohm still played all the games- it is proof of the moment he is having. Also, the confirmation of Hainaut's form is important for me because  when there are good performances from a single player, it makes the squad a bit fuller, a bit more competitive. It is not easy to take a goal in a good atmosphere in front of a good crowd, against a team that was coming from a great performance and also from a home win against Udinese, a team that was healthy. I'm happy that we're going home and I'd like the whole team to think along these lines because the environment and the team need enthusiasm and to feel we're all in the same camp. We must keep wanting to play and wanting to be proactive.'
