HEAD COACH FABIO PECCHIA: “EVERYONE TOGETHER TO GET THE WIN”

Collecchio, 30 January 2025 - Head Coach Fabio Pecchia shared his thoughts during his press conference ahead of matchday 23 in the league against Lecce, which took place at the press room of Mutti Training Centre, in Collecchio.

GO AND TAKE BACK WHAT WE LEFT BEHIND

'We've processed and analysed the many positives from the match against AC Milan. Now, however, we need to think about what we'll do against Lecce, and the things that we'll need to change to get the win, because it's clear that despite all the good things, it wasn't enough. The match that matters is always the one in front of us. We showed this, we went to Milan because we want to play the match. There's the match against Lecce, which becomes that match. The league table says that we're level on points, we have had the same journey. I repeat, the match against Lecce is the one and we want to step onto the pitch to win. The way in which the team has worked during the week and the week before the game in Milan gives me confidence. Recovering players and ensuring that players are confident and well is something that we've done. We've come away from three teams: Napoli, Torino and AC Milan with a bitter taste, with anger. If we want to win our matches, in this case against Lecce, we need to do something else and something better. And together. If we want to go and take it, we need everyone. I see the team is energised, confident and enthusiastic, now it's time to leave it all on the pitch against Lecce. We've heard a lot from our fans, a solid relationship has been built. At a time like this, I've told the lads to show their emotions on the pitch. Sometimes we've managed to, other times we haven't, but if we want to get something important, we need to have everyone and we have to achieve this together'.

I WANT A TEAM WHO WANT TO WIN

'The team needs to have the right mentality to enter the pitch, to play with desire, energy and fluidity that we've shown in important games, because otherwise, we won't be able to score two goals and create many chances. Some things cannot be done if we think negatively. I want the team to play for the win against Lecce. Matches like the one against AC Milan are those that stay in your mind, in the memories of all of us. It's a match played for 91 minutes and 30 seconds, and then you find yourself at home with that type of result. These are things that happen. It even happened yesterday in the Champions League, a certain level of team conceding goals in two minutes. The team must continue to work and push. We need to be confident and believe in ourselves, because those performances are not accidental, but due to bravery and skill'.

BERNABÉ RETURNS TO FEEL THE TEAM SPIRIT

'Hernani is at a pit-stop, he didn't come off in the best condition, therefore we don't think we will have him, but it's a positive thing: Estévez has had another week of training, and it's also great to see Bernabé on the field after the time he spent out. In fact, Bernabé will be in the group for the match because we need him to reconnect with the team spirit in the locker room and during the matches. Simon Sohm is having a great season, but I still want to see something else, because he's capable of this'.

THE ENTHUSIASM OF THOSE WHO ARE AVAILABLE

'Man has stopped, in terms of the game on Sunday, we've lost three important players, but we knew that this month would be tough, a month that means twice as much, three times, because there are lots of things that add up. That's why I'm relying on the group so much, because we have to approach the games and those available must do so with enthusiasm. There's not much we can do about those who aren't available. We need to rely on those that are here, who are fit and ready'.

THE FRONT LINE WITH DJURIĆ AND BONNY

'The match against AC Milan for Djurić wasn't an easy one in a tactical sense and the way it played out. It's a new role for him, a new match and new group, a new job. He is important because he's a point of reference, because he can relieve some of the pressure on our attackers, he gives us an important alternative and we must learn to use him well. For Angelo, his condition has been affected a bit by flu, it started a few days ago, we'll see if he can recover fully because he's a valid alternative to Djurić for me. Playing with them both is a great option becuase we've always played with Angelo as the lone-striker. They're both valid options. The key thing is waiting for them both to be fit. But also, it depends on if they fit in with the whole attacking department, and how it's structured, because it will change a lot when having two players like them. The team needs to have a perfect structure to support a pair in attack like them. For me, they compliment each other and can play together. Milan seems in good condition, so does Angelo'.

HAINAUT AS A RIGHT-BACK, ONDREJKA'S PROGRESS AND A FLUID FORMATION

'With Delprato out, we have Hainaut who can play there and has featured in many important matches, at Torino, Como, but there's also Leoni, we'll see who we use. We'll see. A fixed formation? There are two different options: the 4-4-2 and that with the trequartista, and that's a formation that I'll choose from time to time depending on the type of game, the opponent but also the individual condition of each of my players, because I'll base it off of that and what I see during the week, and in terms of what fits best, the balance needs to be right in defence through the midfield. Beyond the defensive line, the attack needs to be seen as its own collective, not as a single part. I reiterate, having two valid options is an advantage for me. Ondrejka? Whether he's ready or not depends on what happens. From a physical point of view, he came from a league where he played the final game, almost entirely, therefore he is ready. Integrating him into the team... I like his contribution, he's a player with important qualities, he's capable of finishing but also providing for his teammates. Will he be ready?... We can't afford to wait much longer'.
