Collecchio, September 28, 2025 – Head Coach Carlos Cuesta spoke at the press conference ahead of the fifth Serie A matchday, against Torino, in the press room of the Mutti Training Centre in Collecchio.
A FULL SQUAD, THE PRESIDENT WILL BE THERE
“The squad is full, they really want to do well, and we see the game on Monday as a big chance to connect with the fans. To have an opportunity to be with the legends who will be at the match, with our President too, it’s a chance to create that bond and unity that are really important to succeed. The team’s philosophy? I feel privileged, because every day I see how each player, every person in the Club, works towards the same goal and the same vision: to always give their best. And that’s why I feel they deserve it - they deserve to enjoy great nights. That would be my wish: that we all move in the same direction, together with the fans. The ones I see every day are always there, but we all need to share the same mindset and the same direction. That’s what gives me the drive and determination, every day, to give my all. Seeing them is the best example anyone could look to.”
TORINO, AGGRESSION AND INTENSITY
“We made progress on Wednesday, because we still achieved the result even though the performance wasn’t at its best – this is a positive sign. Having the ability to win even when things aren’t perfect is very important. Torino? We expect a strong team, capable of pressing high, aggressive and intense. A side with quick pace and quality players that are able to create danger in open play, with clear ideas. We know how difficult the match will be, and our goal will be to manage it as best we can in order to play the game we want. We expect a very aggressive Torino, looking to win the ball back high up the pitch as quickly as possible, and when they have possession, they will go for it. We’ll play our game and aim to deliver a great performance.”
ENERGY AND THE DRIVE TO PERFORM
“Fired up? Let’s hope so. Our goal is always to give our all. It’s about getting as close as possible to the kind of match we want to create, having the ability to manage the different moments of the game. The moments that allow us to play in the opponent’s half and be dominant, and also those moments when maybe we don’t have that ability and instead need to stay calm and precise and be able to play in every situation. That’s part of our journey. On different occasions we’ve managed to do that. When you want something, it doesn’t mean you lose focus on the process. At the end of the day, every match you play, you want to win. You can’t control what happens, but you can control the quality of your performance, or at least how much you do to make it the best it can be. The desire, the enthusiasm, and the commitment of the players will be there. Will it be a perfect performance? No, because it never will be perfect. The other day we saw that. We managed to get through the round, which was the aim, without playing a perfect match. But in difficult moments we found strength, thanks to the support and help of the fans, when we were definitely struggling a little. Tomorrow we’ll need that again, in many moments. From the very first minute, we’ll all be in it together, giving everything to achieve what we want.”
ADAPTING TO THE OPPONENT
“Adapting? That’s often misunderstood when I say it. I’m not referring to taking a defensive approach. I mean the opponent gives you certain opportunities, certain spaces, defends in a certain way, or otherwise influences how you play. It doesn’t mean you become more offensive or defensive. It means you use different solutions based on the context. We’ve had many moments where we’ve played lots of attacking players or used forwards as defenders. So, I wouldn’t say we’ve played defensively. We approach every match to win. For me there is one clear message, we are focused on one thing. Creating the highest level of performance possible, because that’s what helps achieve results. To reach that level, we need our energy, full commitment, and to build that connection and bond I mentioned earlier - with the fans, and with the management, including the President, who will be attending his first home game. That strength allows us to deliver a high-level performance that brings us the result we want.'
CHOICES IN DEFENCE AND ATTACK
“Defence? There are other options (the question was about Troilo, ed.), like Trabucchi. We’ll see tomorrow what choices we make. Torino’s attacking quality is well known to everyone, not just the forwards, but also the number of central midfielders they have, who can make forward runs. They have players who can drop deep to link play, as well as wingers. All players of great quality and versatility, because they have different characteristics. We’ll do our best to control them, prevent chances, and make the most of the game in the spaces we want. I focus a lot on the team play aspect - everything is closely connected. We need to concentrate fully on match preparation. We’ll only have three days to prepare for the next game against Lecce, and developments will be evaluated during the international break. Oristanio? We’re embarking on a personal journey with him, to help him reach an optimal level as soon as possible. How this process develops over the next few weeks will determine this journey.”
