HEAD COACH CARLOS CUESTA: ”I'LL TAKE THE POINT, BUT WE COULD HAVE WON”

Reggio Emilia, 3 January 2026 - Carlos Cuesta spoke after the game against Sassuolo, on Matchday 18 of Serie A.

'There were many different phases during the match, and almost several different matches within the game itself. In the first half we had more possession, we managed to progress better and often got into the opposition's half, but at the same time on the counter we could suffer against players like Pinamonti and Laurienté. In the second half we sat deeper for the first 20 minutes and weren’t able to press Sassuolo. We also struggled to keep the ball when we won it back, although it’s true that they didn’t manage to create chances either. When we did manage the ball better, though, we had situations that could have led to a win. It was a balanced match. We take the point and the consistency of positive results, but now our focus turns to Inter. I assess the game with both positives and negatives. We wanted to win it, and in terms of the number of chances created we came close, situations that could have caused problems for their goalkeeper. At the same time, we know there are many things we still need to improve to increase those chances. I can see progress in our build-up play, as well as in the number of goal-scoring opportunities we’re creating. There has also been improvement in how we manage different phases of the match, like in the final 20 minutes. But there are still areas in which we can do better, and we’ll do everything we can to make that happen quickly. We’re playing better, but we still need to improve to be where we want to be. Mandela Keita? At times he did very well, at others he needs to improve. We want consistency in performance. In the first half we took a risk after losing the ball, but we’re really happy with his personality, his desire to learn every day and the help he gives the team. At the same time, he knows he can do better, and he will. Everyone is ready to make a big contribution to the team. Those who were on the bench today can do so as well and I’m convinced of that. As for individuals, Delprato trained little with the team ahead of a high-level match against an opponent like Laurienté, but he’s always willing to give everything. Mandela showed his personality in the second half, doing better than in the first, and that’s positive. We know his potential and I’m convinced he can give even more.

The same goes for Mateo (Pellegrino), who is an example of hard work and professionalism. But it’s about everyone’s attitude. I could talk about all the players, not just those three. I’m also sorry about those who were eager to come on but didn’t get the chance; I know they’ll make a big contribution when called upon. One thing I’ve learned in life is to appreciate things, so today I appreciate the point. But at the same time I’m ambitious and always try to win, as a team and as staff. It’s important to have that balance.'
